Tanfield: A Follow UP Day with the BSA 2024

Tanfield: A Follow UP Day with the BSA 2024

Last time we produced the event video with  Tanfield Chambers was to help record their Spring Conference at Ashworth Centre in London’s historic Lincoln’s Inn of May 2023. We were invited back to shoot their event ‘Follow Up Day with the BSA’ which they chose to produce at our favourite location, The Royal College of Surgeons.

Quick outline…

The day was a sequel talk to their previous conference as the Building Safety Act makes ground-breaking reforms to give residents and homeowners more rights, powers, and protections – so homes across the country are safer. We recorded and edited the first conference back in May 2023 last year, which you can read more on here! The BSA is a key part of wider building safety reforms aimed at avoiding a repeat of the dreadful events of June 2017, when 72 people lost their lives after a high-rise fire broke out in the 24-storey Grenfell tower in North Kensington, London, making it the worst residential fire in the UK since the Second World War.

The schedule

Opening with chairman Andrew Butler KC, he set out the day’s ahead, setting up talks from the likes of Robert Bowker and James Fieldsend on reviewing recent BSA case laws, or Richard Granby and Richards Miller’s who investigated landlord and leaseholder’s certificates, and the claims that can be made from them. A whole day packed with important content, chances to chat with solicitors, and other range of topics were addressed, including:..

  • Payback – Remediation Contribution Orders and their evolution
  • The Limitation Game
  • Mike Bassett, FTT Manager
  • The Unbearable Lightness of Building
  • Resident (and Commercial) Evil
  • The Accountables
  • The Interrogation – A BSA Q&A

Including speakers such as Tim Polli KC, Dan Dovar, Robyn Cunningham, Katie Gray, Richard Miller,

How did it go?

For the shoot we used the Sony FX6 and Sony FX3 capturing every detail in 4K, with help from our On-site Producer Kate Fisher, Cameraman 1 Alex Lesseps, Cameraman 2 Rob Lewis, sound from Chris Roberts, and Assistant Alphie Howard.

As well as shooting the presentations, the corporate video production included shooting interviews and vox-pops with the speakers and delegates which will go into a final event promo video, which you can check out here. Be sure to check out the videos on Tanfield’s website, and full coverage of all talks will be made available for those who could not attend on the day, whilst there will also be a set of videos based on key themes that emerged, and a selection of highlights.

Final Thoughts?

While Tanfield’s event may have only lasted a day, it lasted around a month for me editing the event footage. It has been a learning experience as always, from how to balance a casual yet formal look, the intricacies that can go into editing a subtle message and painting a picture of character. I hope for the next shoot we can take a similar approach, as with such a fun environment and more examples of b-roll and people, it really sold and elevated upon that cinematic vibe we like to bring to Tanfield.

Be sure to check out the videos on Tanfield’s website, and full coverage of all talks will be made available for those who could not attend on the day and a selection of highlights.
